Introduction to the Collection

The collection of Richard Hovey contains correspondence, manuscripts, notebooks, scrapbooks, photographs, genealogical information, newspaper clippings and writings, documenting Hovey's career as a poet and writer. Of note are the manuscripts and printed pages of his poems, prose and plays including the original manuscripts for "Men of Dartmouth" and "El-e-a-zar," as well as a short autobiography. Correspondents include Lindsay Swift, William Hayes Ward, Herbert Small, Edwin Osgood Grover, William Jewett Tucker and Maurice Maeterlink. Material related to his translation of the works of Maurice Maeterlinck as well as correspondence and writings by his wife Henriette Russell Hovey are also included.
