William Gillies Cleland IV, born Nov. 6, 1942 in North Plainfield, NJ. Cleland graduated from St. Barnard's School in Gladstone, NJ in 1960 and Dartmouth College in 1964. At Dartmouth he majored in architecture and went on to Antioch New England Graduate School, earning a Masters of Arts in Teaching in 1968. Cleland worked as a mechanic, carpenter and truck driver. Cleland later established Tanyard Farm, a working organic family farm, with his wife, in the late 1970's. He was paralyzed in 2004 and died of cancer on March 3, 2006.
