Abstract:

James Goldstone (1931-1999), writer, director and producer. Dartmouth College Class of 1953. The collection contains screenplays and production material of produced feature films and television shows, as well as unproduced screenplays and project ideas by Goldstone and others. UMatic video tapes of his productions and audio reels and cassette tapes with music scores and cues are also included. The collection also contains one box of student work from his time in the film department of Columbia University.

Introduction to the Collection

The papers of James Goldstone contain screenplays, production material including cast and crew lists, production reports, call sheets, set photographs, shooting schedules, correspondence, contracts, agreements, publicity, posters, clippings and reviews. The material documents Goldstone's career as director, producer and screenwriter of feature films and episodic and long form television shows. The collection also includes unproduced screenplays and project ideas by Goldstone and others, many with notes by Goldstone. UMatic video tapes of his productions, as well as reel-to-reel audio and cassette tapes with music cues, scores and source music are also included, as is one box of student work from his time teaching in the film studies department of Columbia University. Of note are the numerous production stills for his movies "Winning," and "Rollercoaster," as well as scores by Lalo Schifrin and Quincy Jones and the screenplay and production material of such early TV shows as "Star Trek," "The Outer Limits," and "Ironside."

Biography

James Goldstone born June 8, 1931 in Los Angeles, CA. He graduated from Dartmouth College with a BA in English Literature in 1953. He continued his education at Bennington College from which he graduated with an MA in Drama in 1959. After college, he entered show business as a writer, director, and producer as well as a film editor. His film projects included the motion picture "Winning" with Paul Newman, "Rollercoaster" with George Segal, and "Brother John" with Sidney Poitier. He also directed 150 episodes of television including the pilot episode of the original "Star Trek". As a stage director he worked on a variety of plays including "The Trial of Ezra Pound" and "Homeward Bound". He also wrote several screenplays for motion pictures and TV. On an administrative level he was on the Board of Directors of the DGA (Director’s Guild of America), Director of the Executive Committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Board of Governors of the Academy of Television Arts and Science, President of the Bennington Arts Council, and board member of the Vermont Film Commission. He died on November 5, 1999 at the age of 68 of cancer.

The material chronicles James Goldstone's work as director of episodic television shows as well as teleplays and long form television dramas. They include scripts for the television shows "Outer Limits," "Blue Light," "The Case of the Dangerous Robin," The Court of Last Resort," "The Fugitive," "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.," "Perry Mason," "Route 66" and "Star Trek." Long form television dramas include "Kent State," "The Bride in Black," "Calamity Jane: In her own Words," "Charles and Diana: A Royal Love Story," Dreams of Gold: The Mel Fisher Story," "Earth Star Voyager," "Rita Hayworth: The Love Goddess" and "Sentimental Journey." Unproduced scripts with pre-production material are also included. Some scripts written by Goldstone.
