John L. Sullivan, Dartmouth College class of 1921, was born July 16th 1899 in Manchester NH and died August 8th,1982. In 1939 he was appointed the Assistant Commissioner of the Internal Revenue. A year later he was named the Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, and in 1945 he was picked to be Assistant Secretary of the Navy. He became the Undersecretary of the Navy the following year and, in 1947, was named Secretary of the Navy. Sullivan served as a trustee of Dartmouth from 1957-1968, chairing the board's budget committee for several years. He was president of his class from 1951-1956. In 1971 at commencement he gave the 50-Year-Address to the College for the Class of 1921. He also was a member of the Alumni Council for three years and president from 1950-1951. In recognition of his service to Dartmouth he received an honorary degree from Dartmouth and was awarded the Alumni Award.
