Introduction to the Collection

Contains one damaged World War II helmet, two correspondence scrapbooks and photographs relating to Gardner's war service. The letters chronicle Gardner's time in the Army during WWII and include accounts of D-day, life in a military hospital, and the administration of the Buchenwald prison camp. The damage to the helmet was incurred by shrapnel on Gardner's landing at "Utah Beach", Normandy. Photographs contain images of Buchenwald prison, areas around Malmedy, Belgium as well as the effects of war on urban and rural areas.
