Introduction to the Collection

The papers of Stephen Bemis consist of a letter written to him by Reuben Emerson, a Dartmouth College classmate, and his copy of "Catalogus ... in Republica Neo Hantonie" pamphlet (1795).


Stephen Bemis was born in 1774 in Westminster, Mass. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1798. In 1800 he was a tutor at the college before becoming ordained at Harvard, Massachusetts on June 3, 1802. He remained at Harvard, MA as a pastor until 1815.
