The Hanover Historical society was organized in 1961, the bicentennial year of the town's chartering. The Society's purpose is to collect, preserve and make available materials relating to the history of the Hanover community, and to bring together people interested in local history. In 1969, the Historical Society, in association with Dartmouth College, opened Webster Cottage as a local museum. Over the years, the Society has sponsored a number of programs and projects, including the ongoing restoration of gravestones in the Dartmouth cemetery. In 1993, an agreement was reached between Dartmouth College and the Hanover Historical Society through which the Society's collections and administrative records were transferred to the College to provide a better environment for preservation, and greater access for researchers.
