Introduction to the Collection

The Moses Merrill letters contains correspondence to and from his wife Sarah (White) Merrill, as well as from his brother John and his father. Miscellaneous letters addressed to him or his wife are also included.


Moses Merrill was born in 1833, in Methuen, Massachusetts. He attended Dartmouth College from 1852-1854 and is a non-graduated of the Class of 1856. After leaving Dartmouth, he attended Harvard College from which he graduated in 1856. After graduation Merrill began teaching in Cambridge before settling at Boston Latin in 1858, first as an instructor, then as master and from 1877-1901 as headmaster. He also received an honorary doctorate from Amherst. Merrill died in 1902.
