Henry Griswold Jesup was born January 23, 1826 in Westport, Connecticut. He graduated from Yale in 1847, after which he taught at Union School Seminary. He joined the faculty at Dartmouth College in 1876, as the first appointed professor of botany. He held this position until 1898. In 1899, he received emeritus status. Jesup's botanical work was devoted to the local flora of the region about Amherst, Massachusetts and later in the vicinity of Dartmouth College. His most important publication was his "Catalogue of Flowering Plants and Higher Cryptograms," which was published in 1891. Jesup died in 1903.
