Introduction to the Collection

The collection contains letter books kept by Azel Washburn between 1805 and 1840. They contain letters addressed to his wife Sarah Skinner and his son, as well as journal entries with descriptions of his daily life and prayers.


Azel Washburn was born on April 26, 1764, in Middleboro, Massachusetts. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1786, after which he studied theology. He was ordained pastor of the church in Royalton, Vermont in 1789. Washburn died on April 15, 1841 in Royalton.
