Ralph Izard Middleton was born on January 16, 1840, in Charleston, South Carolina. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1860. At the opening of the Civil War he entered the North Santee Mounted Rifleman, and later joined the Marion Artillery in which he remained until the end of the war. After the war he returned to Charleston and resumed his life as a rice planter. He was also assistant treasurer of the Charleston Gas Company for several years. In addition, Middleton was connected with the public schools of Charleston, as vice principal of the Bennett School and Crafts School. He later taught school in Summerville, SC. Middleton died in 1914.
