Introduction to the Collection

The journals of Charles A. L. Swan chronicle his life while a student at Thetford Academy, Vermont. They contain descriptions about the time he rose every day, the weather, his studies, his family and on occasion also newsworthy items he copied from the New Bedford Standard newspaper.


Charles A. Louis Swan was born in 1840, in South Easton, Massachusetts. He was the son of Dr. Caleb Swan (1793-1870). Swan studied Greek, Latin and writing at Thetford Academy from 1852-1854. He died in 1865 at the age of 25.
