Introduction to the Collection

The collection contains two medical notebooks kept by Lewis Emmons when he was a student at Dartmouth Medical School. The notebooks contain notes on the lectures of Dr. Joseph A. Gallup and Dr. Reuben D. Mussey.


Lewis Emmons was born on May 22, 1804, in Woodstock, Vermont. He studied medicine with Dr. Gallup of Woodstock and graduated from Dartmouth Medical School in 1830. After graduation he opened a practice in Shipton, Canada. He returned to the United States in 1837, and began practicing medicine in Hartland, Vermont. Emmons died on August 13, 1878.
