Introduction to the Collection

The collection contains a scrapbook kept by Erastus Wheelock, containing newspaper clippings of poems, articles, and sketches, as well as business and personal calling cards, ephemera, memorabilia and letters related to his military service during the Civil War.


Erastus Wheelock was born on December 19, 1819 in Wardsboro, Vermont. He moved to New York City in 1835, and was involved with a mercantile business until the Civil War broke out. He enlisted as a private in the 14th New York Artillery and rose to the rank of Captain. In 1873, Wheelock moved to Byron, Illinois. Erastus was the brother of Frederick A. Wheelock and the son of Henry Wheelock, both judges.
