Introduction to the Collection

The collection contains land surveys, deeds, legal writings, diary pages, political pamphlets, photographs and maps related to members of the Bezaleel Woodward family. Members represented are Bezaleel Woodward (1745-1804), son-in-law to Eleazar Wheelock and first librarian of Dartmouth College, his son William Henry Woodward (1774-1818), Henry's son William Gustavus Woodward (1808-1871), a judge in Iowa, and Gustavus' son William Woodward. Of note is a manuscript of musings on the death of Charles Carroll, the last surviving member of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Biography

William Magenau was born in 1906, in Nebraska. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1929. After graduation he worked for Page Belting Company, Goodyear Tire Company, Bristol Company and in 1954, founded William Magenau Company. He died in 2004.
