Introduction to the Collection

The Mario Puzo Papers are comprised of the professional papers related to the career of the novelist and screenwriter Mario Puzo. The collection primarily contains manuscript drafts, chapter typescripts and outlines, character studies, galley proofs and handwritten notes related to the development and publication of the author's many novels, including the best-seller, The Godfather, which Puzo also adapted for the screen.

While a few photographs and correspondence with literary contemporaries are present in the Papers, materials relating to Puzo's personal life are, by and large, absent from the collection. The Mario Puzo Papers documents and provides a rich source of research on the subject of representations and stereotypes of Italian Americans in literature and film, fictional accounts of organized crime and the Mafia, and the history of film and screenwriting in the mid-twentieth century.

The materials relating to The Godfather can be found in the first series of the collection. After that, the material has been arranged into series chronologically by title. In most cases the folder arrangement within specific series reflects how the folders arrived at Dartmouth College--adhering to the archival principles of original order where possible. In some instances, folders have been arranged chronologically to facilitate increased discoverability.

Biography

Mario Puzo was born in 1920 to Neopolitan parents in the Italian immigrant neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen in New York City. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Germany. Although he did not engage in combat activities due to poor eyesight. Upon returning home, he enrolled at the New School for Social Research on the GI Bill and embarked on a professional life as a writer. During the 1950s and 1960s Puzo wrote essays and articles for Martin Goodman's Magazine Management company as well as a number of popular men's magazines, including Male and Swank. His first novel, The Dark Arena, was published by Random House in 1955. It was well-received but was not a financial success. Ten years later, in 1965, Puzo published his semi-autobiographical novel, The Fortunate Pilgrim, which recounted his mother's experience emigrating to the United States from Italy. While The Fortunate Pilgrim was praised by critics- The New York Times dubbed it "a small classic"-the book's poor sales left Puzo in financial peril. The combined profits from Puzo's first two novels totaled $6,500 in the 1960s.

According to Puzo, writing The Godfather was a means to financial end. He was 45 years old, a father of five, and knee-deep in debt (owing "$20,000 to relatives, finance companies, banks and assorted bookmakers and loan sharks"). Puzo recounted it was "really time to grow up and sell out." His publisher encouraged him to write about Italian Americans and suggested that a book about the Mafia would sell. Published in 1969, The Godfather chronicles the business dealings and melodrama of the Corleone crime family. The novel spent sixty-seven weeks on The New York Times best seller list and went on to sell an estimated 21 million copies worldwide. After the book's unexpected success Puzo told the press that he "wished like hell" he had "written it better."

Puzo also wrote the screenplays for all three of The Godfather films, collaborating with director Francis Ford Coppola. The Godfather movie franchise went on to be an even bigger success than Puzo's original novel. The films won a combined nine Academy Awards, with Puzo himself winning best screenplay Oscars in both 1973 and 1975, and the trilogy grossed a combined $249 million at the box office. To this day, the first two movies are hailed by film scholars as some of the most significant American films of the twentieth century. Puzo's work on The Godfather trilogy helped to make him a household name as well as a desirable screenwriter in Hollywood. He went on to write screenplays for a number of big-budget films including: Earthquake (1974), Superman (1978), The Cotton Club (1984), and Christopher Columbus: The Discovery (1990).

Even with his successes in Hollywood, however, Puzo continued to identify himself primarily as a novelist, and he went on publish many other novels which centered on the reoccurring themes of the Italian immigrant experience, organized crime, and gambling. Other notable works of Puzo's later career include: The Sicilian (1984), The Fourth K (1990), The Last Don (1996), and Omerta, published posthumously (2000).

Puzo was a prolific writer. He authored numerous essays and reviews for contemporary magazines and published two works of non-fiction, The Godfather Papers and Other Confessions (1972) and Inside Las Vegas (1977). He even tried his hand at children's fiction. The Runaway Summer of Davie Shaw, published in 1966, tells the story of a young boy's adventures across America on horseback.

Mario Puzo died on July 2, 1999 in Bay Shore, Long Island.

Series, Box & Folder List

Series: 1, The Godfather Novel and Film Trilogy, 1965-1994

Series I contains draft manuscripts-many of which include notations in Puzo's hand-chapter outlines, correspondence, scene notes, cast lists, screenplay drafts, and final manuscripts for the novel The Godfather and its subsequent film adaptations ( The Godfather Part I - III).

Much of the material present in this series reflects Puzo's working process and reveals how scenes and characters changed over the course of writing and producing. Items of note include: a draft typescript of the novel,; correspondence with Marlon Brando regarding his casting as Vito Corleone; drafts for the second Godfather installment, originally titled "The Death of Michael Corleone"; and editorial correspondence with Francis Ford Coppola and his team at American Zoetrope Production Company. Researchers should note that references to Hanover, NH and Dartmouth College can be found throughout.

Published in 1969 by G.P. Putnam's Sons, Puzo's The Godfather tells the story of the New York-based Corleone crime family and describes the transfer of power from the patriarch, Don Vito Corleone, to his youngest son, Michael Corleone (who is incidentally described in the novel as attending Dartmouth College). This fictional melodrama is credited for introducing concepts such as La Cosa Nostra, the mafia, and organized crime to a mass audience. The Godfather spent sixty-seven weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and sold nine million copies in its first two years. Puzo also worked with director Francis Ford Coppola to adapt The Godfather for the screen. He won two Academy Awards for his work on the screenplays, in both 1973 and 1975, and The Godfather trilogy earned a combined twelve Oscars. The Godfather films were box office successes and have remained important cultural touchstones and works of twentieth-century American cinema.

Series: 3, The Fortunate Pilgrim, 1965-1997

Series 3 contains manuscript material for both the original (1965) and the reprinting (1997) of Mario Puzo's semi-autobiographical novel The Fortunate Pilgrim. The book tells the story of an Italian immigrant family living in Depression-era New York. The main character and matriarch in the novel, Lucia Santa Angeluzzi-Corbo, is based on Puzo's mother.

An early typescript for The Fortunate Pilgrim as well as a later edited version can be found in this series. Both include handwritten notations, which reveal something of Puzo's editorial process at-work. The Fortunate Pilgrim touches upon themes-most notably organized crime and the Italian immigrant experience-that will reach their apex in The Godfather five years later.

Series: 4, The Godfather Papers and Other Confessions, 1955-1972

This series contains typescript drafts and page proofs for a collection of autobiographical essays compiled in Puzo's The Godfather Papers & Other Confessions (1972).

The manuscript materials in this series offer the most comprehensive autobiographical picture of Puzo, and his personal opinions are apparent throughout. The essays also make clear that Puzo's most strongly felt identities were as a first-generation Italian-American, a writer, and a gambler.

Series: 7, Articles, 1968-1988

This series primarily consists of typescripts for several articles that Puzo wrote over the course of his career. Included here is a copy of his review of James Baldwin's Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone, which appeared in The New York Times in 1968, as well as correspondence with editors at Book World for which Puzo wrote a satirical interview mocking the Paris Review's "Writers at Work" series. Many of the articles reveal Puzo as a sharp-tongued social and literary critic. They also deal with subjects of life-long importance to Puzo, such as New York City and gambling. Researchers should note that this series does not represent a comprehensive list of all the articles that Puzo authored.

Series 9 contains book outlines, chapter drafts, galley proofs, correspondence, and photographs relating to one of the few book-length works of non-fiction Puzo wrote: Inside Las Vegas, published in 1977. In this text, Puzo reflects on what makes Las Vegas a unique space in America. Inside Las Vegas pairs Puzo's prose with a series of documentary-style photographs, both black-and-white and color, which capture life on the Vegas strip. The photographs in Inside Las Vegas were taken by three photographers-John Launois, Michael Abramson, and Susan Fowler-Gallagher. Researchers will also find in this series Puzo's research documentating the history of gambling in the U.S. and abroad.

Series: 10, Superman, 1975-1979

This series consists of original screenplay drafts, correspondence with producers, and transcripts of script conferences for the film Superman (1978). The screenplay was eventually reworked by David Newman, Leslie Newman and Robert Benton, but Puzo maintained a credit line for the story. The now-iconic super hero movie, which starred Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, and Christopher Reeve, was a box office hit.

Series: 12, The Runaway Summer of Davie Shaw, 1979

Series 12 includes the original manuscript for Puzo's young adult book, The Runaway Summer of Davie Shaw, which tells the story of a young boy who traverses the United States on horseback. The book was published by Puffin Books in 1979. This text is notable in that it is the only work of this genre that Puzo produced during his career.

Series: 13, The Sicilian, 1980-1984

This series contains notes, outlines, chapter drafts and edited typescripts for Puzo's The Sicilian, published 1984. In this novel, Puzo returns to the story of Michael Corleone and chronicles his exile in Sicily in 1950. Consequently, The Sicilian is often referred to as The Godfather's literary sequel. In 1987 the novel was adapted for film, but the characters of Corleone and Clemenza (who both appear in The Godfather) were omitted from the film due to copyright issues. Puzo was not involved in the film adaptation process.

Series: 14, The Cotton Club, 1982-1984

This series contains numerous drafts and notes for the original screenplay for the film The Cotton Club (1984), directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Richard Gere, Gregory Hines, and Diane Lane. Puzo's screenplay was eventually rewritten by Coppola and William Kennedy (author of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel Ironweed), but Puzo retained a story credit on the final film. A copy of the final rehearsal script is included in the series and will allow researchers to compare Puzo's and Kennedy's versions of the film.
