Introduction to the Collection

The Papers of Matthew I. Wiencke primarily consist of a combination of travel journals and personal correspondences, in the form of letters and postcards, documenting his travels from 1951-1952. The documents chronicle his ship travel from New York to Athens. The papers primarily document Wiencke's interest in Classical Studies and his observances B.A.out the modern Greek society after the Second World War.


Matthew (Immanuel) Wiencke, Dartmouth College Classics Professor from 1959-1995. B.A. 1947 Yale University, University M.A., Ph.D. Princeton University 1954, and attended American School of Classical Studies, Athens, Greece, 1951-52.

Newspaper clipping dated August 1951, with headline: "Dr. Matthew Wiencke to Study in Europe." Postcards, postmarked from August 21-27, 1951 before Wiencke departed from New York. A combination of typeset journal entries and personal correspondences sent home, 1951-1952, chronicle Wiencke's travels from America to Athens and his stay in Greece, which also contain various observations about other European cities and a trip to the Holy Land.
