Charles F. Emerson was born on Sept. 28, 1843 in Chelmsford, MA. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1868. From 1868 to 1874 he was a math instructor at the NH College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts which was associated with Dartmouth College. In 1872, he was appointed Associate Professor of Natural Philosophy and Mathematics and promoted to Appleton Professor of Natural Philosophy in 1878. He held this position until 1899. In 1893, Emerson was appointed Dean of the Faculty, a position he held until his retirement in 1913. Emerson died in Hanover on December 1, 1922 at the age of 79.
