Abstract:

Isaac M. Taylor (1921-1996), Physician, Chief Medical Officer for United States Navy base at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Born 1921. Consists of material related to his official work on hypothermia as part of “Operation Deep Freeze” in Antarctica and personal correspondence and papers.

Introduction to the Collection

The papers of Isaac Taylor consist of personal correspondence and papers, photographs of the McMurdo Sound region and the men of "Operation Deep Freeze," official Navy documents, reports, publications, ephemera, slides, photocopies of articles on Antarctica, clippings, a VHS tape, and an audio recording documenting the time Taylor served as Chief Medical Officer for the United States Navy base at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica where he did research on hypothermia. Of note are letters and drawings from his children, including his son, musician James Taylor.

Biography

Isaac Taylor was born in 1921, in Morganton, NC. He graduated from the University of North Carolina and received his medical degree, with honors, from Harvard University. He was chief resident in medicine at Massachusetts General and did research in biological chemistry and medical sciences at Harvard. 
 From the late 1940s through the 1950s, Taylor did research in hypothermia as part of “Operation Deep Freeze” in Antarctica. He served as Chief Medical Officer for the United States Navy base at McMurdo Sound from 1955-1957. Later he joined the University of North Carolina, where he was a full professor before serving as dean for 10 years. Taylor died in 1996 in Boston, MA.

Series: Media, 1955-1957

Contains black and white photographs of the McMurdo Sound region, the men of "Operation Deep Freeze" and the Taylor family, an audio recording and a binder of 550 slides taken by Taylor during his tour with the Navy. The run of 200 slides is arranged according to Taylor's labeling system, the remaining slides have been divided by subject matter and film roll. Additionally, all slides have been copied onto a VHS cassette tape that is included within the collection.
