Title Remainder: | Glass Plate Negatives. 1900-1940 | |
Dates: | 1900-1940 | |
Identification: | Mss-225 |
(1879-1962) | Vilhjalmur Stefansson |
(1908-1935) | Lomen Brothers Photographers |
1908-1912 | US Canadian Scientific Expedition |
1913-1918 | Canadian Arctic Expedition |
1923-1924 | Vilhjalmur Stefansson's trip to Australia |
The collection is comprised of 282 glass plate negatives from the Stefansson collection of Arctic photographs that document Arctic exploration and Inuit culture in the early 20th century.
Many of the negatives relate to the Canadian Arctic Expedition (1913-1918). They include images of flora and fauna, earthen and snow covered landscapes, ice formations, indigenous housing, clothing, hunting and fishing practices, as well as many individual and group shots of scientists, Copper Eskimos and Inuits. Within the collection are two sequential sets; the first, showing construction of an snow house (igloo), and the second, converting a sledge to a sled-boat. Images of native culture are contrasted with those of early to mid-20th century industry including hydraulic mining, logging, reindeer herding, and agriculture. Additionally, there are images of mission settlements in Alaska and the North West Territories, aerial photography, archaeology digs at Osterbygd, Greenland, and a few from Stefansson's 1923-24 trip to Australia. Principle photographers are George Hubert Wilkins, the Geological Survey of Canada, and the Lomen Brothers of Nome, Alaska.
The glass plate negatives are housed in four-flap enclosures in seventeen archival boxes specifically designed for the media. Original packing boxes from Eastman Kodak Company, encapsulated in Mylar, are evenly distributed throughout the collection. The negatives should be used in tandem with Stefansson's printed photographs, photo albums, and lantern slides (also housed in Special Collections) as many images are duplicated or part of larger sequences found in corollary collections.
A Filemaker Database including photographs, photo albums, glass plate negatives, and lantern slides streamlines user access to the Stefansson Arctic Photograph Collection. The database is an efficient and comprehensive tool for locating images, themes, individuals, etc. from the collection. An authority file, created in-house by Special Collection staff members, allows for key-word searching in a “Description” field. Searches may be broad or specific. For instance, a search on the key-word, “fauna” will pull up all images of relevant to the plants, trees, forests and flowers of the Arctic region. A search on the key-word, “Stefansson” will pull up all images that include the explorer (during expeditions as well as studio portrait photographs). In many cases, copy negatives are available for study and re-print purposes. Contact Special Collections for more information about this resource and searching capabilities.
The collection of glass plate negatives was given to Dartmouth College by Vilhjalmur Stefansson.
