Harry B. Eisberg Jr. (b.1915), physician for the US Navy. Dartmouth College Class of 1936. The collections contains letters from Eisberg Sr. to his son and photographs of "Operation High Jump" and "Operation Deep Freeze I." Ephemera including medical articles and pamphlets, some authored by Eisberg Sr., school papers of both Eisberg Sr. and Jr. as well as material related to Eisberg Jr.'s time at Dartmouth College are also included.

Rauner Special Collections Library is open to the public and in most cases no appointment is necessary. Introduction to the Collection

The papers of Harry Eisberg Jr. consist of 40 black and white photographs, pamphlets, reprints, manuscripts, a journal, school newspapers, some educational records and ephemera. The photographs document his involvement with "Operation High Jump" (The United States Navy Antarctic Development Program) a US Navy operation organized to establish the Antarctic research base Little America IV, and "Operation Deep Freeze I," a support operation for the research conducted by the International Geophysical Year (IGY). The collection also contains some personal papers of Harry B. Eisberg Jr., and of his father Harry B. Eisberg Sr., including material related to Eisberg Jr.'s time at Dartmouth College and in Italy and reprints and manuscripts of Eisberg Sr.'s journal articles on intestinal obstructions.


Harry Belleville Eisberg Jr. was born in 1915, in Standish, Maine. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1936, after which he studied for two years in the Dartmouth medical school and received his MDCM. from McGill University. Following his internship at the U.S. Marine Hospital in Stapleton, NY, Eisberg Jr. served with the United States Navy as a staff medical officer and flight surgeon. While in military service, he was a medical officer for "Operation Nanook" and "Operation High Jump" from 1945 to 1947. 
 Eisberg Jr. later occupied the first Cold Weather Desk in the Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery and wrote extensively on polar medicine. He died in 1993.
